State closes temporary Covid-19 hospital

Due to the lower rates of Covid-19 hospitalizations in Jalisco, the state government has suspended its operation at the Ángel Leaño Hospital,

and  transferred the 26 infected patients receiving treatment there to the Hospital General de Occidente, which is also located in the Zapopan municipality of the Guadalajara metropolitan area.

At the start of the pandemic, state health authorities commandeered the privately owned hospital to serve as a dedicated center to treat Covid patients, in order to ease potential pressure on public institutions. As part of its “hospital reconversion plan,” the government spent around 180 million pesos on equipment and infrastructure to bring the facility to the required standard.

At first, the hospital, which is owned by the private Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara (UAG), experienced only a slow influx of patients, but came into its own as infections spiked in January and February.

As of this week, around seven percent of Covid-19 designated beds were occupied at Jalisco’s public hospitals.
