Baseball star going for gold

Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro welcomed Mariachis de Guadalajara first baseman Adrián “Titan” González to the Government Palace, prior to his joining up with the Mexican team bound for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

pg4aThe former Major League Baseball hitter will take a break from his Mexican Baseball League (LMB) duties to help Mexico challenge for a medal at the games, which begin on July 23. Gonzalez was accompanied by Mariachis head coach Benjamín Gil, who is also taking a leave of absence from the league to lead the Mexican team in Japan. Alfaro called Gonzalez, who enjoyed a stellar, decade-long MLB career, an “exemplary human being and, without a doubt, a motivation to thousands of young people.”

The Mariachis currently head the LMB Northern Division, and this week qualified for the playoffs, which start August 7.

The Mariachis’ next home series is at the Estadio Pan-americano in Zapopan against the Bravos de Leon on Friday, July 23, 7:15 p.m., Saturday, July 24, 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 25, 3 p.m.  The following weekend, July 30-August 1, the Mariachis host the Pericos de Puebla, with games starting at the same times.
