Tapatio sports stars stand on the cusp of greatness this weekend

Sporting heroes don’t come around frequently in Mexico. This weekend, two of the most prominent in the current era — both natives of Guadalajara — will seek to further cement their megastar status.

Boxer Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, 31, aims to become the first Mexican to hold all four supermiddleweight world champion belts at the same time, when he gets into the ring with Caleb Plant of the United States, Saturday in Las Vegas.

And Sergio Perez, also 31, hopes become the first Mexican Formula One driver to win a race on home soil – and he may never have a better opportunity, seated in one of the fastest cars on the grid in Sunday’s Mexican Grand Prix.

Both men have reached the pinnacle of their careers and, while not sharing many personal characteristics, both are instilled with a single-minded drive to win, the essential attribute needed to become a sporting giant.
