New 20- and 50-peso bills unveiled

Two new bank notes have started circulating in Mexico.

Predominantly red and green, the new 20-peso bill commemorates the 200th anniversary of the consummation of Independence, showing the entry of the Trigarante Army into Mexico City on September 27, 1821.

The other side of the banknote shows the mangrove ecosystem in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve in Quintana Roo, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The image also features a crocodile and a heron.

When placed under UV light, some elements on the reverse side glow green, yellow, and blue.  It is also  the first bill in the history of the Banco de México with a horizontal image on the front and a vertical image on the back.
