Lawyers file complaint as video allegedly shows Jalisco Supreme Court judge molesting teen

A magistrate assigned to Jalisco’s Supreme Court is under investigation after a video was leaked showing him allegedly abusing a 15-year-old girl in the kitchen of a house during a family gathering last March.

At a press conference held this week, lawyers from the National College of Jurists of the State of Jalisco, representing the family of the girl, elaborated about the complaint that they filed with the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) against judge José de Jesús Covarrubias Dueñas, who also teaches at the Universidad de Guadalajara (UdG).

The father of the minor, who was present at the press conference, said his daughter considered Covarrubias “like an uncle … We opened the doors of our home to him. We held him in esteem, and for him to do these things is not right.”

The lawyers said previous complaints of sexual abuse have been made against the magistrate although he has never faced prosecution. Despite the current denuncia, the FGE has yet to charge Covarrubias with any crime.

In a statement, the Latin American and Caribbean Committee for the Defense of Women’s Human Rights (Cladem) described Covarrubias Dueñas as a “sexual predator” who has been singled out previously on multiple occasions.
