Checkpoints nab over 1,000 tanked up drivers

Officers from Jalisco’s Transportation Department (SETRANS) applied 184,924 breathalyzer tests during the special holiday perios of DUI checks enforced between December 1, 2021, to January 4, 2022.

Working around the clock, the officers - nearly all of them female - set up checkpoints at various Guadalajara metro area locations, detecting 459 drivers with high alcohol levels, who were held in cells for up to 36 hours, while their vehicles were whisked off to the pound.

Another 633 drivers who tested slightly over the limit avoided spending a night in jail, but were issued hefty fines.

Jalisco authorities say the number of fatal accidents in the Guadalajara metropolitan area has fallen significantly since the introduction of breath test checkpoints in 2013.
