Twelve people died during a shootout between a well armed criminal gang and police officers in the municipality of El Salto on Wednesday evening. Four of the deceased were officers attached to the municipal force.
According to the official report, two police officers were dispatched to a house in the San Lorenzo neighborhood after receiving a tip-off that people in handcuffs were seen being led into the property. When the uniformed officers knocked on the door, they were “pulled inside” and shot, the report stated. Officers from a back-up patrol car then forced their way into the house, initiating a sustained exchange of gunfire.
Support from the Jalisco State Police soon arrived, and the shootout continued both inside and outside the property, as well as at a nearby house, where some of the gang members had managed to flee.
