Hailstorms batter Jalisco

A feature of the early rainy season storms in Guadalajara and other parts of Jalisco has been the frequency of hailstorms, which typically last for no more than 15 minutes but can cause injuries to people and damage buildings, vehicles and crops.

A fierce hailstorm in the early hours of Tuesday in the Jalisco town of Arandas blanketed streets with a thick accumulation of ice lumps, known as “hail swaths.”  Although local authorities reported that no properties had suffered serious damage, they said the layers of ice reached 60 centimeters in some places.

Social media posts by people in other locations showed shattered car windshields and windows, as well as damage to plants and small trees, all caused by hailstones.
