Congress gets tough on motos

Jalisco legislators are drawing up laws to regulate the use of motorcycles in a bid to improve road safety and reduce accidents in this state.

Complaints from motorists and pedestrians at the lack of regulation covering motorcycles are backed up with statistics showing that motorcycles are involved in more accidents than any other kind of motorized transport.

According to Mónica Magaña Mendoza, who presides over the Mobility Commission in the state legislature, the regulation and use of motorcycles will be the subject of a full chapter in a new Mobility and Road Safety Law.

Among areas included in this chapter will be the sale of motorcycles, who is permitted to purchase and drive them and what qualifications they need, as well as rules on how fast they can be driven on certain streets and avenues, Magaña said.
