Astros Women clinch basketball crown

“Anything you can do we can do better” could be the slogan of the Astros de Jalisco women’s team, who on Wednesday evening were crowned champions of the inaugural season of the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional Femenil (LNBPF).

pg6aThe title was secured thanks to a 69-64 win in the deciding game of the final series played on the road against the Adelitas de Chihuahua.

This means the women have now matched the men’s team, which on July 12 won the the Pacific Coast Basketball Circuit (CIBACOPA) championship.

After falling behind 2-3 in the final series, the Astros Women won two games on the bounce in their opponent’s stadium to complete a remarkable comeback.

Wednesday’s final game was a nailbiter. Roared on by 10,000 fans, the Adelitas led 62-61 with three minutes to play, only for the Astros to triumph in a do-or-die finale.

Standing out for the Astros was 26-year-old Californian Arica Carter, who scored 23 points in the final game and was named the series’ MVP.
