Earthquake damage in Jalisco still being assessed

At least 14 churches in southern Jalisco dating from the 17th and 18th century suffered structural damage from 7.4-magnitude earthquake that rocked large swath of central Mexico on September 19.

According to a report by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) damage to churches has been identified in Zapotlán el Grande, Zapotiltic, Unión de Tula, Gómez Farías, Sayula, El Grullo, Atoyac, La Manzanilla de la Paz, Amacueca, Tizapán El Alto and San Gabriel.  Jalisco authorities have also confirmed damages to churches in Zapotitlan de Vadillo, Casimiro Castillo and Tolimán.

Cardinal Robles Ortega, the archbishop of Guadalajara, said the affected dioceses lack the resources to carry out the repairs and he will ask state authorities for financial assistance.
