Impunity in Jalisco over 95%

Despite having the second highest number of criminal investigators assigned to its prosecutor’s offices, Jalisco also ranks second in the number of “open case files” on its shelves.

According to NGO México Evalúa’s “2021 Evaluation of the Criminal Justice System in Mexico,” impunity for crimes committed in Jalisco rose from 94.5 percent in 2020 to 95.4 percent in 2021—basically meaning that crime really does pay in our state.

There are 311,384 unresolved cases in Jalisco, says the National Statistics Institute (Inegi), just behind Baja California (324,144) and ahead of Mexico City (224,764).  The total of 1,036 agents assigned to Ministerio Publico offices in the state is only exceeded by the capital (1,568).

México Evalúa suggested that prosecutor’s offices need to restructure their internal organization models and be better funded if impunity is to be reduced.

“Without sufficient resources, no justice institution will be able to improve its response capacity for citizens. Impunity will continue to escalate and we will have an even weaker rule of law,” said Edna Jaime, director of México Evalúa.
