Governor lauds achievements, despite unease over security

Highlighting advances in health, education, mobility, public transportation, economic development, culture, sports and job creation, among other areas, Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro delivered his fourth state-of-the-state address (informe) on November 6, promising to “not slow down … stay the course” or be distracted by groups who “would like to see our state do badly.”

pg1aAs is customary on these occasions, Alfaro highlighted his administration’s achievements over the past four years, bombarding the 650 invitees to the Jalisco Congress building with an avalanche of numbers to make even a mathematician’s head spin.

The governor boasted of a 114-percent increase in public investment, 79 percent of which has been earmarked outside the Guadalajara metropolitan area. The annual budgets for health and education have risen substantially, with new hospitals opening, and 983 schools undergoing either reconstruction of rehabilitation. Around 2.35 billion pesos has been spent on road and highway improvements, more than 1,500 city buses have been replaced, the BRT Macro Periferico bus route has opened on the city beltway, and work on Line Four of the metro area’s Tren Ligero (light train) line has started, Alfaro said.
