Covid surge worries state governments

Mask wearing is coming back into vogue as the winter months settle in and Covid and flu cases start to creep up.

pg2aThis week, Nuevo León became the first state in Mexico in many months to make the wearing of face masks mandatory in most indoor public spaces.  The requirement covers health facilities, shops, restaurants, public transportation and government buildings.

Nuevo León Health Secretary Alma Rosa Marroquín said the measure was implemented due to a sharp rise in the number of Covid cases, hospitalizations and fatalities in the last few weeks. Just over 80 percent of cases are now identified as the new BQX strain of the virus, she said.

The northern Mexican state, whose capital Monterrey is Mexico’s third largest city, has seen Covid case numbers jump from 27 in week 45 of 2022, to 259 in week 46, Marroquín said. Covid testing has also rocketed from around 900 a day to more than 2,000.
