Ex governor remembered on two-year anniversary of death

Relatives of former Jalisco Governor Aristóteles Sandoval have criticized the lack of progress made by state authorities to find those responsible for his murder, a shooting death that occurred in a Puerto Vallarta bar December 18, 2020.

pg10a copy“Many more things need to be done to clarify the crime,” said Lorena Arriaga, Sandoval’s widow, after a remembrance mass held in his honor in Guadalajara last weekend.

Sandoval was killed by a man who followed him into the bathroom of the bar and shot him several times at point blank range. Investigators say they have ascertained the identity of the man, as well a a woman who accompanied him into the establishment, although no arrests have been made.

On various occasions, both the state attorney general and Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro have declared the case “resolved,” without providing any motive for the crime.  Their statements have left most citizens puzzled.

“It is not known who the masterminds were … it seems that (the authorities) want to archive the investigation,” said Sandoval’s father Leonel, a former judge. “We suffer a lot but but we trust in justice.”

Sandoval, a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), served as state governor from 2012 to 2018. He was 46 years of age at the time of his death.
