Emissions fines to kick in March 1

Fines for car owners who fail to get an emissions inspection (often referred to in the United States as a “smog check”) will kick in as of March, 2023 the Jalisco state government has announced.

Although the program has been running throughout 2022, the owners of Jalisco-plated vehicles who did not take them for an inspection this year won’t face sanctions. The slate has been wiped clean, and fines will only be applied in regard to the 2023 testing calendar.

This means that all privately owned, Jalisco-plated vehicles with plates ending in 1 should be taken for testing in either January or February.

From March 1, owners of vehicles in this category who are unable to show traffic officers proof of a test are liable for ticketing and a fine.

The calendar continues in the same vein throughout the year with owners of vehicles with plates ending in 2 required to schedule inspections in either February or March.
