Bus crash claims 15 Lives

Fifteen people, including four children, died on New Year’s Eve when a private tour bus carrying holiday makers returning from the coast overturned over at kilometer 44 of the Jala-Compostela highway in the state of Nayarit.

The bus carrying 57 people had left the beach resort of Guayabitos just after 2 p.m. en route to the city of Leon, Guanajuato, where all the passengers resided.

Eleven people were pronounced dead at the scene, while the majority of the injured were initially taken to the Compostela Community Hospital. Four people later died at this hospital.  Some of the other injured passengers were subsequently transferred to two other hospitals in Tepic, the capital of Nayarit.

As of press time, Nayarit authorities had not issued any statement as to the cause of the accident, which, according to reports, did not occur in inclement weather conditions.
