Free flu shots still available

Around 2.2 million people have received a flu jab in Jalisco so far this season, the State Health Department (SSJ) reported this week.

As of January 6, the agency said it has confirmed 236 cases of influenza, although the numbers are likely far from accurate since detailed reporting of the flu virus in Mexico is usually rudimentary.

Flu jabs are free of charge for all residents of Jalisco, regardless of nationality (no questions are usually asked or documentation required), and can be obtained at SSJ clinics located throughout the state, as well as other health care institutions, such as the Instituto Mexicano de Seguro Social (IMSS).

The SSJ said by the first week of January, 86 percent of its target population for this year’s flu season had received a vaccine.  The program will continue through March, or as long as vaccines remain available.
