US nonprofit offers suicide helpline to local LGBTQ youth

The Trevor Project, a U.S. nonprofit founded in 1998 that focuses on suicide prevention efforts among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth, has launched its free-of-charge helpline service in eight western Mexican states, including Jalisco.

pg7The NGO has activated a 24/7 digital service for crisis care and suicide prevention through its confidential TrevorChat and TrevorText applications, as well as text messages via SMS and Whatsapp.

The presentation of the Trevor Project’s services in the Centro-Bajío region was held at at the Zapopan Art Museum on Tuesday, January 24.

“Suicide is a public health crisis that affects vulnerable communities such as the LGBTQ+ community to a greater extent, due to the discrimination, violence and non-acceptance they may experience,” said Edurne Balmori, executive director of The Trevor Project Mexico.

Recent research published by the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry  notes that 14 percent of LGBTQ youth in the United States reported a past-year suicide attempt in 2022.
