Authorities lack sensitivity regarding violence toward women, NGO says

The Jalisco branch of women’s rights NGO CLADEM has rebuked Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro for his comments following the shooting deaths of two women in the prosecutor’s office in Poncitlan on January 31.

A man entered the unsecured building just as his 21-year old partner and her mother were about to file a complaint about his domestic abuse.  He shot both dead, before fleeing. He was arrested the following day in Tepic, Nayarit.

In a press bulletin, CLADEM (Comité de América Latina y El Caribe para la Defensa de los Derechos de la Mujeres) reproached Alfaro for saying that “as a government it is difficult to control and predict this kind of aggression.”

CLADEM’S missive said those kind of comments only sought to absolve his administration of any kind of responsibility in preventing lethal violence against women, noting that “prevention must be a fundamental principal of public policy.”
