Bus transporting kids’ soccer team crashes in dead of night

One woman died after a passenger bus transporting a children’s soccer team from Villa de Álvarez in the state of Colima to a tournament in Mazatlan, Sinaloa veered off the Guadalajara-Tepic toll road (autopista) in the early hours of Wednesday, May 10.

The accident occurred at kilometer 74 of the highway, in the municipality of Hostotipaquillo, Jalisco Civil Protection reported.

The victim was a 48-year-old woman. Five other passengers were injured, and one of them is reported in serious condition. All were transferred to a private hospital in Tepic.

In total, 30 minors and 18 adults were traveling on the bus.

The bus departed Villa de Álvarez just after midnight, and the journey to Mazatlan was expected to take around eight hours.

Neither Colima or Jalisco authorities commented on why a children sports team needed to be traveling overnight to the tournament.
