If Senator Xóchitl Galvez is to win the presidency next year, votes from the traditionally conservative state of Jalisco will be vital to her cause.
Galvez will represent the opposition Frente Amplio por Mexico (FAM) coalition formed of parties from three differing political persuasions—the conservative National Action Party (PAN), the centrist Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and the smaller, leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD)—as the main challenger to the ruling Morena Party candidate (see page 1).
Galvez is a member of the PAN, although her political ideology is somewhat vague. Despite her entrepreneurial background, she has often supported populist causes, and although a fierce critic of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, does not disagree with all of his policies.
Jalisco voted in large numbers for Lopez Obrador in 2018, but supporters of Galvez believe she can reverse that trend in next year’s presidential election.
