Rainstorms & flooding expose metro area’s poor wastewater infrastructure

An intensive storm that pummeled Guadalajara on the evening of Thursday, August 31—dumping more water on the metro area than on any day of this year’s rainy season—left dozens of vehicles waterlogged and stranded, and tow truck firms overwhelmed with requests for assistance, Householders in more than 100 properties across the city reported damage from flood waters.

Severe flooding affected at least 25 neighborhoods of the metropolitan area, including El Dean, Mercado de Abastos, Zona Industrial, Bosques de la Victoria, La Nogalera, Colón Industrial, Villa Guerrero and Miravalle in Guadalajara; Ciudad de Sol, Rinconada del Sol, Loma Bonita Ejidal and La Calma in Zapopan; and Villa Fontana, Loma Verde, La Duraznera and Ojo de Agua in Tlaquepaque.

One of the worst affected areas was Avenida Colón at the intersection with Isla Raza, where at least five vehicles were completely submerged by water exceeding 1.5 meters in height. Several tunnels were also inundated and made unpassable.

The president of the Asociación Jalisciense de Grúas (Jalisco Tow Truck Associaton) told Mural newspaper that firms received an unprecedented 800 calls for assistance. Because many city streets and avenues were underwater, tow trucks were taking up to three hours to get to some stranded drivers, he said.
