Jalisco schools under scrutiny after fatal Jocotepec accident

Tragedy struck a kindergarten in Jocotepec on Thursday, February 6, when a toddler was crushed to death after a perimeter wall collapsed on top of him. The incident has prompted authorities to examine other Jalisco schools for structural defects that may put students and staff at risk.

pg13aEdgar Santiago González Enríquez, 5, was waiting to enter the afternoon session at Carmen Torres Veliz Preschool when the four-meter-high wall collapsed shortly after 2 p.m. The kindergarten is located in downtown Jocotepec on Calle Independencia.

Jocotepec Civil Protection officers rushed to the scene, but the boy had already succumbed to his injuries. Agents from the Deputy District Attorney’s Office of Regional Investigation arrived shortly afterward to collect evidence and take charge of the investigation.

Later in the day, Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro spoke about the accident, offering his condolences and expressing solidarity with the grieving parents.
