Human-centered NGO empowers women behind bars

La Cana, a Mexican nonprofit working to transform prisons into spaces of opportunity, is celebrating nine years of efforts to support the reintegration of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women.

pg6aThis Mexico City-based organization has shown that prison doesn’t have to be a life sentence of marginalization—it can be the beginning of a dignified new chapter.

Founded by a group of women concerned about prison conditions and the lack of reintegration policies in Mexico, La Cana offers a holistic approach to rehabilitation that includes job training, psychosocial support, legal assistance and follow-up care after release. The organization’s model reaches women before, during and after incarceration.

“We want to turn prisons into places of opportunity,” said the founders in a joint statement. “We believe in second chances.”
