Mexican corn farmers this week once again took to the nation’s highways, causing major travel disruptions, after breaking off negotiations with the federal government over the minimum price of their crop.
In Jalisco on Monday and Tuesday, hundreds of tractors blocked traffic on more than 15 federal highways for over 36 hours, until the protest ended Wednesday morning after a tentative agreement was reached between farmers’ representatives and the federal government.
The roadblocks severely impacted transportation in Jalisco and many other states, including neighboring Colima, Michoacán and Guanajuato. On the key Morelia–Guadalajara highway, some motorists were stranded in their vehicles for more than 18 hours. One traveler posted an image from inside her bus, where she was trapped for 24 hours. At some points, protesters allowed vehicles to pass through the roadblocks at 30-minute intervals.
