The blockades, which at their peak saw over 65 key points and several international customs offices blocked, were a cry against two intertwined crises: rampant highway crime and economic policies that farmers say are pushing them to the brink. Having found the federal government’s response inadequate, organizers are now raising the stakes, arguing that if billions are available for international events like the World Cup, solutions can be found for the countryside.
As in similar recent protests, several strategic corridors in Jalisco were paralyzed. Key blockades included the Autopista Guadalajara-México at the Ocotlán toll booth; the Guadalajara-Colima highway near Ciudad Guzmán; the La Barca-Jiquilpan and La Barca-Atotonilco highways, and the Irapuato-Guadalajara highway in Atotonilco el Alto.
