As the world turns its attention to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a Jalisco-based collective is making sure the country’s missing persons crisis is not forgotten, and are using artificial intelligence to give the disappeared a voice.
Luz de Esperanza launched a digital campaign last week featuring videos in which AI-generated versions of missing persons — based on real photographs — narrate their own stories, criticize the lack of government action and call attention to the humanitarian crisis.
“Through AI, they talk about the World Cup, about how governments use money for other things instead of searching for them,” said Héctor Flores González, co-founder of the collective. “For us, it’s a very strong impact. Each week, we will release new videos with more missing people speaking out.”
