2,000+ firearms meet their end

A member of Mexico’s armed forces destroys a firearm during a weapons disposal event held at the XV Zona Militar in Jalisco on May 19.

In the coordinated federal, state and municipal operation, a total of 2,762 guns — 933 long arms and 1,829 handguns — were removed from circulation, along with approximately 265,000 rounds of ammunition, magazines and other accessories.

“Artifacts and tools that would represent a danger to our society, especially our youth, have been taken off the streets,” said Regional Commander Porfirio Vélez Fuentes, who oversaw the destruction alongside Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus.

All the weapons had been seized in military or law enforcement operations.

The origin of the firearms was not revealed, although it is presumed that the majority of the weapons came from the United States.
