El Lago de Chapala (Lake Chapala) is visibly shrinking before our eyes day by day. And official figures tell us it’s no mirage.
Recent data from the National Water Commission shows the lake standing at 41 percent holding capacity. That’s a significant drop from 58 percent registered a year ago and 66 percent in 2022.
For long-time lakeside residents it’s a flashback to the crisis years that prevailed from the mid-1990s until 2003, a period when the shoreline receded a kilometer beyond the Chapala lighthouse.
But Chapala is not the only lake dramatically impacted by the current drought that holds more that 60 percent of the Mexico’s territory in a withering grip and other negative factors.
