Fury over fence triggers citizen action at Ajijic beach

The installation of a chain link fence surrounding a section of the Ajijic beach that began prior to the Easter holiday period caused alarm among village activists who keep a close eye on invasions of the shoreline federal zone.

pg11aAt first there were concerns that an attempt was afoot to privatize the area stretching from La Crucita, the cross erected the foot of Calle Nicolás Bravo, westward to Ramón Corona. It turned out to be a project implemented by local authorities, involving Town Administrator Timoteo Aldana and interim Chapala Mayor Gamaliel Soto. The purpose was to create a protected area for family recreation, picnics and camping that would be out of danger from unchecked vehicular traffic, motorcycles and horseback riders. Space between the fence and the edge of the lake was cleared to permit free access to the rest of the beach.

“We are working to make public space a safe family zone at the Crucita Park,” Soto explained in a Facebook post on Friday, March 29.
