Mudslinging dominates gubernatorial debates

The three candidates for the governorship of Jalisco seemed more interested in airing each other’s dirty laundry than providing innovative solutions to the state’s pressing problems in the first two of four debates scheduled before the June 2 election.

pg1eAt one stage in the first debate, Pablo Lemus of the Citizens Movement revealed a photograph, allegedly taken in Dubai, in which his Morena Party opponent Claudia Delgadillo is seen with Luis Oswaldo Espinoza Marín, the former head of the real estate company Asesores Jurídicos Profesionales (AJP), which is linked to a fraud of more than 1.6 billion pesos. “It’s you in Dubai enjoying the money that was swindled from all these people,” Lemus said.

Delgadillo came prepared and responded by showing a photograph of Lemus also with Espinoza Marín, similarly accusing him of links to the realtor, who committed suicide in August 2022 after the allegations of fraud came to light.   Lemus explained he was invited to an event related to organ donation, at which Espinoza approached him and asked for the photo.
