The Meg

Jaws has got nothing on this monster. After escaping an attack by what he claims was a 70-foot shark, Jonas Taylor must confront his fears to save those trapped in a sunken submersible.

Director: Jon Turteltaub. Cast: Jason Stratham, Bingbing Li, Rainn Wilson. Rated: PG-13. Time: 1:53.

The First Purge

America’s third political party, the New Founding Fathers of America, comes to power and conducts an experiment: no laws for 12 hours on Staten Island. No one has to stay on the island, but $5,000 is given anyone who does. Director: Gerard McMurray. Cast: Y’lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade. Rated: R. Time: 1:38. The fourth in the “Purge” series of films begun in 2013, the previous three were directed by James DeMonaco.

Mission Impossible

In this sixth installment of the franchise, Ethan Hunt and his IMF team, along with some familiar allies, race against time after a mission gone wrong. One reviewer says it’s a good idea to see the fifth and third Mission Impossible films before you go to this one as there are a lot of references to past evil-doers. Another says “Every laughable exaggeration from old films made it into this one.”  Director: Christopher McQuarrie. Cast: Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Sean Harris, Angela Basset, Vanessa Kirby, Alec Baldwin. Rated: PG-13. Time: 2:27.
