Tuesday recitals

The Degollado Theater opens its doors each Tuesday for the free classical music series Martes de Musica y Opera. No tickets are sold nor is there numbered seating. Just turn up before the performance and grab a seat. The quality is always exceptional, and the theater will often fill up. August 18: Amores Plenos with Agnieszka Slawinska-Barcikowska (soprano), Carlos Aguirre (tenor) and Sergio Hernandez (piano). August 25: Gala concert in conjunction with the Festival de Musica Tequila 2015, also honoring the 150th anniversaries of the foundation of the music conservatories in St. Petersburg (1864), Moscow (1866) and Mexico City (1866), as well as the 75th anniversary of the University of Colima.

Orquesta Típica de Guadalajara

Local band that usually plays in the downtown bandstand celebrates its 36th anniversary with a concert under a roof for a change. Expect to hear classics such as “Blue Danube,” “Charge of the Light Brigade” and “Granada.”

Thursday dance

Free dance presentations by accomplished groups are held each Thursday. August 20: An “Anthology of Dance” with the Danza con Clase Company. August 27: Invited dancers perform to renowned opera music in a show titled Balletópera.

Instead of politicians arguing, enjoy free recitals in Guadalajara city hall’s council chamber.

Corteo

The magic of Canadian-based circus arts troupe Cirque du Soleil returns to Guadalajara with “Corteo,” a show that debuted in Montreal in 2005 and has subsequently been seen by eight million people in 19 countries.

Folk dance

The renowned Ballet Folklorico de la Universidad de Guadalajara is back for its summer/fall season, performing through October 11. This troupe’s repertoire takes in dances from the states of Veracruz, Michoacan, Guerrero and, of course, Jalisco, with its breathtaking “La Negra,” “La Culebra” and “Jarabe Tapatio” finales.

Mariachi Festival Galas

Six flagship gala mariachi concerts are scheduled at the Teatro Degollado during the 22nd International Mariachi Festival at the end of this month. They feature the biggest names in the mariachi genre, including Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, Mariachi de América de Don Jesús Rodríguez de Hijar, Mariachi los Camperos de Nati Cano and Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlan.  Several of the performances will also include a full orchestral accompaniment.

Tokio Hotel

German pop-rock/alternative rock band, founded in 2001 have released three number one albums in their native country and sold more than 10 million CDs worldwide.

Dan Nimmer Trio

U.S. jazz pianist and composer Dan Nimmer is joined by bassist David Wong and drummer Rodney Green for the next concert in the excellent Jazz at Lincoln Center series sponsored by the University of Guadalajara. Nimmer studied jazz at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music from the age of 15 and moved to New York in 2004. In the following year, he joined the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. He also became pianist in a variety of bands led by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. His second recording as leader was Kelly Blue, a tribute to pianist Wynton Kelly.

More folk dance

Guadalajara city hall’s Ballet Folclorico Guadalajara continues its summer series. The theme of their season is “Cielito Lindo.”

Ballet

Famous Russian State Ballet Mari El presents “Carmen” and Ravel’s “Bolero.”  Formed 45 years ago, the troupe is part of Opera and Ballet Sapaev, one of the oldest and most important theaters in Russia. Its young cast exudes professionalism, impeccable technique and high artistic level.  Frequently invited to Mexico, Mari El has been nominated three times for the prestigious Lunas del Auditorio award for the best live ballet performance of the year.

Andre Riu

Dutch violinist and conductor best known for creating the waltz-playing Johann Strauss Orchestra. Together they have turned classical and waltz music into a worldwide concert touring act, as successful as some of the biggest global pop and rock music acts.
