Cirque du Soleil

Canadian circus arts troupe returns to city to present Sep7imo Dia, a new work based on the music of Soda Stereo, arguably Latin America’s most famous rock band.

Arena VFG (Km 20, Guadalajara-Chapala Highway), November 10,11, all  at 9 p.m.;  November 12, 4:30 p.m.; November 15, 16, 17, 18, all at 9 p.m.  Tickets starting at 900 pesos.

Monday concerts

Concerts/recitals are held on Mondays at this cultural complex to the north of the city. November 13: Martha García Renart and Juan Carlos Benavides in a piano four-hands recital.  November 27: Tridente Jazz Trio interpret pieces by Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Gershwin, Claude Bolling. December 4: The Monica Zuloaga Christmas Quartet.

Tuesday recitals

The Jalisco Culture Secretariat’s “Martes de Música y Ópera” series showcases talented classical musicians at free-of-charge Tuesday evening recitals. November 14: Edna A Lobato, mezzosoprano, and Monica Arrambides, soprano, are accompanied by Jorge Luis Godinez on piano. Works by Humperdinck, Dvôrak, Massenet, Bizet, A. Lara, M. Ponce, among others. November 21: Recital by Víctor Celis Padrón, a master of the Yucatecan guitar. November 28: Zapopan Municipal Choir directed by Timothy G. Ruff Welch.

The orchestra performs Symphony No. 2 by Gustav Mahler, known as the Resurrection Symphony. Marco Parisotto conducts. Nicole Heaston (soprano) of the United States and sensational homegrown talent Cassandra Zoé Velasco (mezzosoprano) are the soloists. Accompaniment by the Zapopan Municipal Choir, directed by Timothy Ruff Welch.

Chinese drama, dance

The China Arts and Entertainment Group and the China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater present “Zhaojun, La Princesa,” a traditional tale that takes place during the Han Dynasty (around 30 BC). The drama centers on one of Emperor Yuan’s concubines, Wang Zhaojun, who is charged with the mission bringing “harmonious kinship” to a region afflicted by war. This work has won multiple international awards for its staging, costumes and music.

Broadway classics

Young singing talents Luisa Cortés, Cristian Moro and Daniella Lazzeri interpret much-lowed pieces from major musicals, including Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, La La Land, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat and more. With José Chacón on guitar and Willy Zavala on piano.

Concert four hands

Acrobatic Nutcracker

Founded in 1951, the Dalian Acrobatic Troupe is one of the most well known acrobatic troupes in China. In its debut tour to Mexico, the outfit will present a mix of acrobatics, ballet and pantomime in an ingenious version of “The Nutcracker,” with music by Tchaikovsky.

The Metropolitan Opera presents Thomas Adès’s “The Exterminating Angel,” inspired by the classic Luis Buñuel film of the same name. Hailed by the New York Times at its 2016 Salzburg Festival premiere as “inventive and audacious … a major event,” the opera is a surreal fantasy about a dinner party from which the guests can’t escape. Tom Cairns, who wrote the libretto, directs the new production, and Adès conducts his own adventurous new opera.
