Star Wars fandom alive & well in Mexico

The staying power of the Star Wars franchise is second to none.  While boomers will no doubt insist on the superiority of the original trilogy of films (1977, 1980, 1983), subsequent generations have been captivated by a succession of follow-ups: the prequel trilogy (1999, 2002, 2005) and the sequel trilogy (2015, 2017, 2019), plus two stand-alone films (2016, 2018) and an animated feature.

Over the next month, two Star Wars-related events in Guadalajara should thrill fans of the multimedia franchise of all ages.

First up is a concert featuring the much loved music from the scores of nine Star Wars films composed by John Williams, the 91-year-old who has received an astonishing 52 Academy Award nominations.  These scores are among the most widely known and popular contributions to modern film music.

The concert will feature the Camreta Opus 11, a Mexico City-based orchestra comprised of dedicated and talented young musicians. There will be 70 musicians on stage interpreting Williams’ pieces. For information on the orchestra, see their website (opus11.mx) and Facebook page.

The Concierto Galactico takes place at the Palcco Auditorium (Av. Central Guillermo Gonzalez Camarena 375, Poniente, Zapopan) on Saturday, September 9, at 5 p.m.  Tickets, 285 pesos, available at galacticogdl1.boletia.com.

pg4bEarly next month, Imperial Stormtroopers, Sith Lords, Clone Troopers, bounty hunters and other villains from the Star Wars universe will take over the streets of Guadalajara in the Galaxies Parade.  The event is organized by the 501st Legion, an international fan-based organization that is active on six continents, with local units known as “Garrisons” and “Outposts” in over 60 countries.  More than 300 characters from the saga will be in the parade, with participants from Mexico, the United States, Colombia, Costa Rica, Austria, Guatemala, Panama, and other nations, organizers say.

The parade route will be more than three kilometers long, running along Avenia Vallarta to the Glorieta Minerva, and is scheduled Saturday, October 7, starting at 4:20 p.m.
