Lip Sync is fun and more than just moving your lips

The following interview is with Maryanne Gibbard, Wendy Hamblin and Leslie Martin, three women who have been performing for many years in the annual benefit Lip Sync show – a 12-year tradition at Lakeside.  Funds from this year’s show will go toward improvements to Auditorio de la Ribera.

What is it about Lip Sync that keeps you coming back each year?

Maryanne: I love being someone else. With Lip Sync I can be anyone I want to be, so that is what really brings me back. Also everyone in the show, and there aren’t a lot of rehearsals. But it all comes together. I call it organized chaos.

Wendy: It is the other people. I enjoy being in their company. I enjoy dancing and pretending I am singing – the clapping, the audience that makes you feel good, memorizing lines and steps, which is good for your brain. That’s what brings me back. I love everything about it.

Leslie: I always wanted to be on the stage. I took dancing lessons all my life, but I could never sing and carry a tune. So I can get up onstage, sing my heart out and I am always in perfect tune.
