‘Big draw’ operatic group returns to Open Circle

A favorite in recent years at Ajijic’s Sunday morning event, the Compañía de Ópera de Jalisco, founded in 2013, returns February 16, 10:30 a.m., for a performance of art songs of Mexico and Latin America, which is expected to once again leave the audience “in a haze of euphoria,” according to Lake Chapala Society organizer Margaret Van Every.

pg25“This time we’re going to focus on the human voice and art songs from Mexico and Latin America,” said Teresa Banderas, emphasizing that this gives the performance “a classical, rather than a popular-music, tint.” The Company’s alto, Banderas also sings in the large, prestigious Coro del Estado de Jalisco (Jalisco State Choir), directed by Chema Lopez, who also sings tenor in the company, which does not enjoy state support.
