‘Movies That Matter’ Film Festival returns to Ajijic March 2

The Democrats Abroad Lake Chapala Chapter will kick off its 10th Annual “Movies That Matter” Film Festival Thursday, March 2, at the Cine+Lago Theater in Plaza Bugambilias in Ajijic.

Ten films in the not-for-profit series will run at 1:30 p.m. every Thursday and Sunday during the month of March. The first British drama, “Denial” (March 2), showcases Rachel Weisz as a historian who must prove the Holocaust actually occurred when a renowned denier sues her for libel. This true story highlights the disturbing rise in anti-Semitism and lies about history. “She Said” (Sunday, March 5) is about the two New York Times reporters who helped ignite the “MeToo” movement by shattering decades of silence on sexual assault in Hollywood.

Two short documentaries will run on Thursday, March 9: “Stewart Udall: Politics of Beauty” and “War on the EPA.” Udall served as Secretary of the Interior during the 1960s and was a legendary advocate of social and environmental justice, and of bi-partisan and international cooperation on ecological conservation. Laws protecting human health and the environment followed until the Trump administration attacked government regulatory bodies and climate change science, and gutted the Environmental Protection Agency. The films call on viewers to move beyond current polarization and to work together to save our natural heritage.
