Efrén González makes a splash in Chiapas

Prolific Ajijic artist Efrén González presented his first exhibit of oil paintings in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas last week, leaving an indelible mark on colleagues there who know the man but are less familiar with his body of work.

pg1bcHosted by the Museo San Cristobal de las Casas (MUSAC), the exhibit showcases 30 medium-scale oil paintings that González has produced this year. The subject matter encompasses diverse aspects of Mexican life, such as bustling marketplaces, village churches and outdoor landscapes.

The show’s centerpiece is a two-meter-tall painting of a colorful Chiapas fiesta scene that González produced on site, in a single day.

Referring to a photograph he captured on a previous visit, he sketched the first outlines on the giant canvas in black paint around noon on Wednesday, July 3.  He added the final touches just 24 hours later.

The exhibit “Luz y Color Espontaneos” (Spontaneous Light and Color) opened on July 5, with the brand new work glittering from the doorway of one of MUSAC’s main galleries.
