Bubbly pianist, entertainer charms local audiences

Thursday and Friday’s very different concerts by Jeffery Straker, in aid of Niños Incapacitados, were enormous fun and extremely well received. Audiences were even persuaded to join in, clapping in time and copying various sounds sung by Straker, which they did with gusto at Ajijic’s Auditorio de la Ribera.

Church setting perfect venue for benefit organ concert

Wednesday’s recital by guest organist J. Neal Biggers at Ajijic’s San Andrés Church was extremely well supported, as was the request for food contributions and/or donations in aid of the Villa Infantil Orphanage, which is entirely dependent on such private support.

LLT tackles gritty drama with aplomb

Lakeside Little Theatre has taken on quite a challenge with its upcoming production, “The Night of the Iguana,” the 1961 drama based on Tennessee Williams’ 1948 short story that revolves around the complex mix of personalities and emotions at the Costa Verde Hotel, in (imaginary) Puerto Barrio on Mexico’s West Coast, during the summer of 1940.

Gershwin piano concert slated at Auditorio

Antonio Cabrero Mendoza, director of the International Symphony Orchestra in San Miguel de Allende, is offering a piano concert dedicated to the music of George Gershwin on Thursday, March 5, 7 p.m. at the Auditorio de la Ribera.

One of the most significant figures in the history of jazz, Gershwin’s musical style is deeply rooted in folklore and improvisation. “Rhapsody in Blue” and the opera “Porgy and Bess” are examples of his unique ability to make symphonic music without losing the impromptu essence of jazz.

Gershwin incorporates advanced harmonies and textures to simple “blues” inspired tunes and displays great craftsmanship and academic precision in composing classical works that were destined to change jazz forever.

The influence of Gershwin improved the quality of the Broadway musical theater and the love songs and instrumental pieces of the “Golden Era” of music in the United States, now widely referred to as jazz standards. Gershwin is the most important link between Broadway musical theater, jazz film music, swing dance music, the jazz song, the opera and the symphony.
