Bare Stage Theatre

What happens when a middle-aged writer who is broke inherits an apartment in Paris, which he plans to sell to solve his financial woes — only to find it legally inhabited by a 92- year-old woman, the former owner, and her rather unpleasant daughter? Find out in Bare Stage’s April production, “My Old Lady,” by playwright Israel Horovitz.

That situation is the springboard for Horovitz’s eloquent, funny, brilliantly paced plunge into parent-child relationships. Chloé (the daughter) and Mathias (the writer) still rage with the anguish of the unloved children they always felt they were. Ninety-two-year-old Mathilde tries to convey to them the restrictions and culture of another generation and justify the magnificent selfishness that goes hand in hand with her glowing joie de vivre.

The pasts of these three characters begin to intertwine fairly early in the play, and the work proceeds with further revelations about events that occurred decades ago. While some of the revelations are expected, the play often has an emotional depth that could not have been anticipated.

Darlene Sherwood directs Debra Bowers, newcomer Rob Ferron, and Louise Reid Ritchie.

Show dates are Friday, April 26, Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28. All shows are at 4 p.m. Tickets are 200 pesos. Reserve at This email address is being protected from spambots. Artists forge realignment

Artists and friends of the arts in the Lake Chapala area are moving forward to create a new group to replace the defunct Arts Alliance of Lake Chapala and Ajijic Society for the Arts. An initiative emerging from a meeting of former members help on April 1 is the launch of a survey designed to define and broaden the scope of a new organization.

Interested persons are welcome to respond to the two-fold bilingual questionnaire posted at https://forms.gle/6EsYacWhKcsQYcK97. The deadline is Wednesday, April 24. Part 1 requests comments and feedback to be shared with those interested in creating and belonging to this new organization. Part 2 is an optional opportunity to update your personal information, which will be used to provide current contact and interest data to the new organization leadership, and will not be shared as part of the survey results.
