Student artists exhibit

The Efrén González Children’s Art Program has announced an exhibition of artwork created by its talented young artists, to be held at the Ajijic Cultural Center on the Ajijic Plaza.

The exhibition opens with a reception on Friday, May 30, 6 p.m., and runs through Tuesday, June 3.  The participating artists range in age from 5 to 16. The exhibition features reproductions of their original work, presented in a consistent format that is larger than the originals. The student artists receive half of the proceeds from sales of their art cards.

Live Music

FRIDAY

Jeffree White and Jan Reimers perform Bluegrass and Beyond, featuring covers of David Grisman, Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice, the Stanley Brothers, Bill Monroe, Fats Waller, and more. Catch them from noon to 2 p.m. at Huerto Café in Riberas del Pilar, and again from 7 to 9 p.m. at Pasta Trenta in West Ajijic.

Mary’s Island performs at Casa Zoe, Paseo la Colina 116, La Floresta, 4:30 p.m. Entry, 350 pesos, includes a drink, snack and access to swimming pool. Reservations: 331-574-2583.

SUNDAY

La Bodega hosts a Blues Jam with five local musicians at 5 p.m. Come play, sing, and dance! No cover, but a 100-peso minimum applies. Reservations: 331-144-2143.

Violinist Konstantin Ziumbilov and guitarist Ramón Macías Mora perform a free concert 12:30 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala.

Aldo Varela (Rey Migrante) opens his exhibit “Inconmensurable,” Friday, June 6, 6 p.m. at Centro Cultural Ajijic.

Nelly Rocha presents recent works in her exhibit “Rostos que Inspiran,” with musical accompaniment by pianist Sofía Ramírez, Saturday, June 7, 6 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia in Chapala.

Opera

Lakeside Little Theatre screens the final opera in its Met Live series, Rossini’s comic Il Barbiere di Siviglia on June 7, 8 and 9 at 4 p.m. Dung in Italian with English subtitles, this acclaimed production stars Andrey Zhilikhovsky.  Fathom Entertainment calls it “an effervescent comedy ... a madcap production.”

Classes

Registration is open for the Lake Chapala Society’s Children’s Summer Art Camp, running July 21–25, ages 4 to 16.

Workshops include drawing, embroidery, textile art, photography, watercolor painting and more.  Lunch and all materials provided. Spaces are limited.

Register in person at the LCS Education Department, 16 de Septiembre #16, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or during the Saturday art program, 10 a.m. to noon.
