Live Music

FRIDAY

Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez takes the stage at the Ajijic Auditorio at the CCAR, 7:30 p.m. Tickets, 650 pesos presale, 750 pesos at the door, can be reserved at 332-353-5203.

The Chris Cuevas Band plays at 7 p.m., followed by a Jam session with Los Roomies at 9 p.m. at the Cameleon Bar, Constitucion 29 in Ajijic.

• Local artists Rigoberto Navarro and Efrén González celebrate the fourth anniversary of the Ajijic Museo de Arte (AMA) with a new exhibit. Navarro features a diverse collection of sculptures carved from stone and wood. González presents some of his most recent paintings. The new exhibit also showcases the rotation of works from the entire AMA collection, representing dozens of Mexican and foreign Lakeside artists. AMA is located at Flores Magón 3, West Ajijic, open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• Chapala-based textile artist Synthia David’s first local show, “Light Up Your Life,” featuring hand-painted silk batik lamps (ArtLites), handcrafted handbags and scarves, is up at Casa del Sol Inn.

• Tapatio artist Diego Reynoso’s photographic exhibit “La Marca del Agua, Capas de un Desastre” that focuses on the environment, is up at the Centro para la Cultura y las Artes de la Ribera. Open Wednesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Up through June 28.

 

Opera

Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) will for the first time host a Spanish-language opera, “El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego,” Sunday, June 14 and Monday, June 15.

The opera paints, in the words of the producers, “a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Filmed live at New York’s acclaimed Metropolitan Opera, “El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego” will be projected with English subtitles in LLT’s main McIntosh auditorium, with its state-of-the-art screen, projection and sound systems both days at 4 p.m. Tickets, 350 pesos, are available at lakesidelittletheatre.com and before the shows at the box office.

 

BRAVO! Auditions

The BRAVO! is holding auditions for the Third Annual 10-Minute Play Festival, and other shows for Season 3. Auditions are Sunday, June 21 and Monday, June 21 from 10 a.m. to noon, at The BRAVO!, Hidalgo 441, Riberas del Pilar. Performances will be September 16-20. At the auditions, a wide range of roles is available for up to eight short plays, with up to five directors. Experienced actors and newcomers welcome. Comedy at The BRAVO!

Pirates and monsters and poodles, oh my! That’s what you’ll laugh at when Skitz-O-Funnia, Lakeside’s only sketch comedy troupe, stages a benefit show for The BRAVO! Theatre. Inspired by Chicago’s Second City comedy, Skitz-o-Funnia performs original sketches with local actors.
