Jalisco is turning into Berryland, but not everyone is happy about it

What do the Spanish names of these four fruits have in common: fresas, zarzamoras, arándanos, frambuesas?

pg8aNot much, it would seem, but if we look at their English equivalents, we have: strawberries, blackberries, cranberries and raspberries.

In point of fact, Spanish has no well-fitting word for berries, but because everyone is talking about them these days, the English word “berries” is now part of the general public’s lexicon in Mexico.

Yes, berries are in! Everyone likes them because they are rich in antioxidants and because people in the know are interested in healthy food. So where are the best places in the world to grow them?

Mexico, it seems is high on the list. “More than 75 percent of fresh blackberries consumed in the United States are grown in Mexico,” says the North American Raspberry & Blackberry Association. In fact, the Berry Rush is in full swing in the states of Michoacán, Jalisco, México and Pueblo. Farmers are ready to try something new, instead of corn and potatoes. And now along come the berry companies, which have figured out how to consistently produce great harvests—and they guarantee they will buy your produce. What could be better?

Berries Paradise is a Mexican company founded in 2008 in Tuxpan, Jalisco. It describes itself as “an environmentally friendly operation,” which “allows people to prosper in Mexico without need to migrate to survive.”
