Who is Xóchitl Gálvez & could she be Mexico’s next president?

The latest data puts Claudia Sheinbaum, the former mayor of Mexico City, as the clear favorite to succeed Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador as the next president of Mexico in 2024.

pg3As things stand, little would seem to stand in the way of Sheinbaum—whose National Regeneration Movement (Morena) is way ahead in all the polls—becoming the nation’s first female president.

Except, perhaps, for an arguably even more charismatic woman, who this week entered the fray, believing she can unite a fractured opposition alliance with no comprehensible ideology or direction.

Enter the race Xóchitl Gálvez, a hard-to-categorize senator from the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) who picks and chooses from her party’s agenda, often swaying from conservatism to marxism, and everything in between. Specifically what has marked Gálvez’s tenure since her election as a senator in 2018 has been her relentless and ruthless criticism of Lopez Obrador’s authoritarian presidency, which she has consistently labels as corrupt, opaque and a disaster for the country, while not completely disagreeing with all of his policies.
