Pablo Lemus Navarro, the winner of Jalisco’s gubernatorial election on June 2, was born in Guadalajara in July 1969 to a family dedicated to the sale and repair of musical instruments.
Musical Lemus was founded by his grandfather, Jesús Lemus Aguayo, in 1932, after he came to Guadalajara from Bolaños in northern Jalisco to work as an accountant for Wagner and Levien, another local musical enterprise.
The company (also known as Casa Lemus) grew over the years to open other branches in the city and also Guanajuato, selling records and many kinds of audio and sound equipment. By the 1970s and 80s, the firm had become the leading musical outfit in the city, with outlets in the many of the smart shopping malls sprouting up, such as Plaza del Sol, Plaza Mexico and Plaza Patria, as well as in buzzing zones such as Chapultepec and Lopez Cotilla.
The advent of the new century and the emergence of more dynamic stores such as Mixup and Mr. CD, meant that Casa Lemus’ dominance in the local market started to wane.
In a November 2019 article published in El Informador, marking the 50th anniversary of Plaza del Sol, Lemus recalled how he “spent a large part of his childhood and adolescence” in his father’s flagship store in Plaza del Sol.
