Talented magician Juan Carlos Rodarte (the Wizard of Wonders) brings his full bag of tricks to Guadalajara’s Teatro Gallerias at the end of April.

The only Mexican magician to win first prize at the World Magic Championship held each year in Germany, Rodarte is generally considered one of this country’s finest illusionists.

Rodarte brings an historical perspective to his show, narrating the highlights of magic over the decades, dating back to the days of “the father of magic” Harry Houdini.

Expo Guadalajara

Expo Guadalajara is back in full swing after the Easter break with a series of trade shows that are open to the public.

AMSOC Mother’s Day

The American Society (AMSOC) will celebrate Mother’s Day on Thursday, May 8 with a special luncheon.  The menu will consist of chicken breast stuffed with mushrooms and spinach, plus dessert.

There will be a 50/50 raffle and great prizes.

The lunch is served from noon to 1:30 p.m. The cost is 130 pesos.

Jazz Festival

Jazz bands will be playing all day in one of the city’s lesser-known pedestrian walkways  on Wednesday, April 30 (World Jazz Day) to herald the start of the four-day Guanatos Jazz Fest and Ciclo de Jazz.

The festival is planned in the Andador Coronillo (between Hidalgo and Morelos), centered at the Coltrane Cafe (number 20), famed for its promotion of jazz bands and pizzas.  Other businesses in the walkway have also agreed to participate.

The music will flow from 1 a.m. and continue through to 9 p.m., organizers say.

The Guanatos Jazz Fest and Ciclo de Jazz takes place from April 30 through May 3 and includes concerts, jazz master classes, round-table discussions, jam sessions and workshops.  Sites are Teu Lloc, Rojo Cafe, Escarabajo Scratch, Prier Piso and the Universidad Libre de Musica.

Some important names in Mexico’s jazz world will play at the festival, including pianist Rafael Alcala, double-bassist Agustín Bernal and saxophonists Arturo Caraza and Diego Franco. For full details visit facebook.com/24Unarevistaadestiempo.

 

Green Race

The U.S. Consulate in Guadalajara is one of the sponsors of the Green Race GDL to benefit Reforestamos Mexico, a nonprofit that seeks to conserve the nation’s forests through a series of community projects.

The 3-kilometer and 10-kilometer races will set off from the American School of Guadalajara at 8 a.m. on Sunday, May 11.  The inscription fee is 250 pesos for adults and 120 pesos for children under 12.  The school will also host an “environmental fair” during the morning.

Papirolas

“Dilo con Arte” (Say it with Art) is the theme of this year’s Papirolas children’s expo, which takes place at Expo Guadalajara from May 21 to 25.  Organized by the Universidad de Guadalajara, the event features dozens of activities for kids of all ages to enjoy.
