City Living - April 25, 2014

As part of the celebrations to mark World Book Day on Tuesday, April 29, more than 100 people will read passages from “Las Batallas en el Desierto” (Battles in the Desert) by Mexican author José Emilio Pacheco in a mass reading organized by the Universidad de Guadalajara.

Pacheco, who died January 26 at the age of 74, was a poet, novelist, journalist, essayist and literary critic. “Las Batallas en el Desierto” dealing with adolescents growing up in a less crowded but corrupt and unjust Mexico in the 1940s and 1950s.  He also translated works by Samuel Beckett, Tennessee Williams and T.S. Eliot and taught literature at universities in the United States, Great Britain and Canada.

The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Rambla Cataluña, to one side of the Museo de las Artes at Avenida Vallarta and Enrique Diaz de Leon.  Covered seating is provided for the audience.

 

Cooking club

The new cooking club at the American Society of Jalisco (Amsoc) held a successful first meeting on April 8. The theme was vegetarian or Asian dishes with tropical fresh fruit dessert. The array of delicious foods to choose from included spinach lasagna, two different types of oriental noodle salads, spring rolls with three different dipping sauces, stuffed vegetarian bell peppers with two types of sauces and stir-fried mushrooms with veggies. For dessert there were chocolate dipped strawberries.

The next meeting will be on May 13, 12:30 p.m. The theme will be main dish salads and cold soups with pudding deserts. Set-up is at noon.

Motorbike Expo

Anyone with a penchant for motorbikes should head down to Expo Guadalajara from Friday, May 16 through Sunday, May 18 for Moto Galería, a trade show that encompasses everything the world of motos has to offer in Mexico.

All the major biking brands will be on hand to show off their gleaming machines, as well as smaller enterprises dedicated to the art of creating customized bikes.  There will be special area for stunt riding, and many other attractions, organizers promise.

The event is open to then public daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

A gathering of motorcyclists (called a gran rodada) to raise funds for children with cancer precedes the expo on Sunday, May 11, noon at the Minerva Glorieta in Guadalajara.

 

St. Mark's Easter egg hunt
