American Society preps for Thanksgiving, other events

The American Society (Amsoc) is gearing up for upcoming winter season with a series of events through November and early December.

The English-language Book Club meeting on Thursday, November 16, 10 a.m. will discuss “The Attention Merchants: The Epic Struggle to Get Inside our Heads” by Tim Wu (2016). This is a comprehensive account of the media world’s more than century-long struggle to grab and keep increasingly distracted customers. The author argues that consumers are indeed exhausted, our eyeballs deeply occupied. The question remains: Where do we go from here?  What’s next in the long history of company gambits for grabbing our attention?

Amsoc’s traditional Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday, November 23 includes homemade turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potato/apple compote, cranberry sauce, green beans, and pumpkin pie for dessert. Tickets are 230 pesos for adults, and 120 pesos for children 12 and under. There will be a raffle and some great prizes.

Thanksgiving reservations are now being accepted in person and by phone. They must, however, be paid by Thursday, November 16 – without exceptions. In the past, people reserved and then don’t show up, resulting in the purchase of too much food.

Voting in Amsoc’s annual election for its board of directors began November 6 and will continue through Friday, November 24, weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  Final voting and the general assembly will take place Saturday, November 25, 10 a.m.

Amsoc members should note that there will be no flu shots this year at the clubhouse. Free shots are at all Centros de Salud (Health Centers) in Jalisco.

The humorous “Life with Luna” 2018 calendars make a great Christmas gift for dog lovers and are now available at the clubhouse for 300 pesos.

Regular activities at Amsoc include an  intermediate Spanish class on Wednesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m.; a beginners class on Fridays from 10 to 11:30 a.m.; and an English conversation class on Saturdays from 2 to 4 p.m. A drop-in meditation class is held Thursdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m.  AA meetings are scheduled Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 6 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to noon.  Regular Thursday lunches begin at noon.
